For Sport Relief 2018 Pure Offices in Swindon took on a bike challenge alongside Pure Offices Leamington. The challenge was to see who could cycle the longest distance, using a spin or exercise bike. The challenge was set for Tuesday 20 March 2018 and this is how it went.
Leamington took a very quick lead on the day, with Roger Thomas, the Centre Manager cycling 26 km in the first hour, starting at 8.00 am. Swindon did not start their own challenge until 9.00 am on the day and were therefore already playing catch up right from the off.
However, it was not long before Swindon began catching the Leamington total, due to a steady flow of volunteer challengers which ensured the bike was in use for the entire morning. Around lunchtime we thought disaster had struck when our spin bike’s computer crashed but we managed to arrange a replacement very quickly and only lost around 40 minutes of pedal time.
In the afternoon the bike was once again fully utilised and we were soon well into triple figures and feeling confident. Our master stroke, came at 2.15pm when keen cyclist and runner Ken Westgate of Qixol, cycled a whopping 40km in one hour. We finished our day at around 3.45pm as the spin bike was needed back at Nuffield Gym, but the total we had achieved was 192 km in just under 6 hours.
The final distances covered by the two centres were 192 km at Swindon and a mere 150 km at Leamington. In addition to the challenge we were collecting money for the charity and the result of this is £150 from Leamington and £225 from Swindon.
Everyone involved in the challenge, which was 20 individuals in total, thoroughly enjoyed the day and we are all feeling very pleased with ourselves having come out on top. Here’s to the next challenge!!
Pure Swindon wishes to extend a huge thank you to everyone who participated in the challenge including Nuffield Health who provided the spin bike as well as a representative, Joe Capobianco, who attended site on the day, put in a couple of turns on the bike to ensure we made optimum use of the time and gave plenty of encouragement to others.
